Reading -  We will begin the year working on the short vowels.  We will then move into blends and long vowels.  Please review the vocabulary words with your child nightly.  They will be asked to read those words when they return their homework for the week.  The children will be taking Reading tests throughout the year.  When the tests come home please review these with your child.  Please read with your child daily, it will help your child to grow as a reader.

Math - In Math we will be working making the number 10 to start the year.  The students will be making 10, decomposing numbers to 10, adding doubles, adding doubles plus one, missing addend,  creating and identifying equivalent equations to 10.  We will also be working on addition facts using timed tests.  The children will start taking timed addition tests once they have had the opportunity to see how 10 is made.  The math goal is that the students complete 30 addition facts (0 - 10) in 2 1/2 mins.  Please practice these at home with your child. We will also be doing the same with subtraction facts.  The students are to master 30 subtraction facts (0-10) in 3 mins.

SpellingSpelling lists will come home on Monday and the spelling test will be given on Friday.  The students will have dictation sentences to do on the back of their spelling tests.  This allows us to she how they use the words in context and if they remember all the parts of a sentence.  Please review these words nightly with  your child.  We will be reviewing them daily in school also.

WritingWe will be working on Informative writing, narrative writing and opinion writing and also Literature Responses.  We will rotate between these three throughout the year.
