Hello! Welcome to my Teacher WebPage!
I am Mrs. Gina R. Niemel, Literacy Specialist and Teacher Assistant in Literacy at Cleveland-Hill Middle School. I am privileged to be part of a dedicated team working together for the good of every child.
As the teacher of both Grade 7 ACE ELA and Grade 7/Grade 8 AIS, I actively encourage the growth and development of skilled and enthusiastic readers, writers, and thinkers!
My educational background and professional experience uniquely positions me to strengthen your child's literacy throughout the year. My qualifications include a Master’s degree in Literacy Education (Canisius College), NYS certification in Literacy (B-12), and NYS certification in Social Studies (7-12). This specialized training supplements, supports, and extends your child’s literacy learning.
Literacy learning takes place throughout our day - not just during one specific time - because it is an integral part of everything that we do here at Cleve-Hill. Our youngest students use their oral language and pre-literacy skills while they learn to read and write. As students progress through the grade levels, they transition from learning how to read and write to using reading and writing to learn - especially in the individual content areas. This is really the focus of literacy instruction at the middle school level and continues well into high-school and college.
However, some children still need help with the basic building blocks of literacy to become grade-level readers and writers. Others need support to maintain and develop their grade level literacy skills. Still others need to refine and expand their above grade-level reading and writing. There is always a “way in” to literacy learning for every child.
